Bean There, Done That: A Love Letter to Your Morning Coffee

Why that first cup of coffee is basically a personality trait, and how to brew it better at home.

Coffee is not a beverage. It is a personality trait, a morning ritual, and for some of us, a legally acceptable substitute for a functioning nervous system.

Why we love it

There is something about the smell of fresh grounds that no alarm clock can replicate. Coffee wakes you up before the caffeine even hits your bloodstream.

Brewing better at home

  • Use freshly ground beans, not pre-ground dust that has been sitting in a bag since last winter
  • Water temperature matters: aim for 90-96°C, not a rolling boil
  • Invest in a cheap scale. Eyeballing ratios is how you end up with battery acid

The bottom line

You do not need a $3,000 espresso machine to enjoy a great cup. You need good beans, clean water, and five extra minutes you were going to spend scrolling anyway.
